tweeting “wasps aren’t evil or assholes they’re just animals with clear behavioral patterns that you can learn and accommodate for” and putting my phone on vibrate

it’s genuinely very easy to interact with wasps and not get stung. When wasps nest around my home I offer them a slice of apple or salami (depending on species) as a peace offering when I first see them just so they know I’m not going to be a threat to them. I repeat infrequently to ensure they remember me. I will also fish out any wasps that fall into water or get trapped inside with my bare hands so they only associate my scent with free food or helping their comrades. Even with wasps I don’t meet at home I just give them a hand and to this day I have never been stung. If you’re too close to the nest and they’re concerned about it, they will warn you, you just have to look and listen for it.

Be a friend to your local wasps. They’re excellent pest control and pollinators. They are vital to the environment and deserve better than to be maligned and killed on sight. Insects and other Arthropoda you find in your own backyard are among the only wildlife you can interact with ethically and safely. Learn about your local bugs and you will become a lot less afraid of them over time. They’re fascinating creatures deserving of respect and they are essential to our continued survival.
